Description: Basil is a highly aromatic, annual bushy herb native to Southern Asia, now grown in many temperate countries around the world. It grows to a height of 30-60cm dependent on the variety and has square stems, and oval, toothed, glossy leaves, which are dark green in colour. Although some varieties such as Purple Ruffles can have a wavy edge and reddish-purple colouring. The small, two-lipped flowers present in whorls and are white to pale lilac in colour. Basil contains vitamins A & C and is rich in calcium and iron.
Brief History: In his 17th century herbal Nicholas Culpeper recommended basil as means of removing venomous poisons from the body ‘Being applied to the place bitten by venomous beasts, or stung by a wasp or hornet, it speedily draws the poison to it’. He also cautioned people from using basil during pregnancy, saying that basil ‘expelleth both birth and after-birth; and as it helps the deficiency of Venus in one kind, so it spoils all her actions in another’.

Safety Advice: Basil contains the substance methyl chavicol which can be toxic and irritating to the skin, avoid if this substance is known to be an irritant. This oil should not be used whilst pregnant. Suitable for human consumption in culinary recipes, if a few drops of the oil are used and no more. Essential oils are very potent and high doses should not be consumed.
SUGGESTED USEBasil oil can be added to pot pourri to help deter flies and pests; it can also be added to bath products such as bath soaks for easing tired muscles and hair products. Add to creams and lotions for the skin and to sprays along with oils such as citronella to help deter pests.
Shelf life of two years provided that goods are stored in an airtight container in ambient conditions.
