Description: Bilberry is a native of Europe, northern Asia and North America; it is a perennial deciduous shrub growing up to 30 cm. The leaves are oval and finely toothed with a leathery look, starting out with a pinkish tinge then turning yellowy-green finally turning red in the autumn. The flowers are waxy white to pale pink and bell-shaped and hang beneath the new leaves. The blue-black berries are round, with a flat top.
Interesting Fact: Did you know that bilberry juice was once used to treat typhoid fever? The antiseptic and germicidal nature of the herb helped to kill off the typhoid bacillus. The juice was also used as a tonic for the kidneys and to treat diarrhoea.
SUGGESTED USEBilberry powder can be added to smoothies and shakes or stirred into yogurt; you can also add it in with your dried ingredients when making flapjacks and cereal bars. The powder can also be used to obtain a blue/ black dye depending on the mordant used, the dye can then be used be used to dye wool and cloth, it can also be used to colour homemade ink.
Shelf life of two years provided that goods are stored in an airtight container in ambient conditions.
