Description: Chipotle chillies are in fact, fully ripened jalapeno peppers that are smoke dried, they are dark reddish brown to black in colour and bursting with a delightful smokey, slightly chocolaty flavour with a medium heat, registering on the Scoville scale as have 15, 000-25, 000 SHU’s. Our chipotle chillies have been heat treated to preserve their freshness and their unique flavour and have been pre-cut to 3-6mm for ease of use. Handle with caution!
Interesting Fact: Did you know that the word chilpotle is derived from the Mexican words for chilli ‘chil’ and smoked ‘poctli’ giving ‘chilpoctli’ which means ‘smoked chili’? When the ripe red jalapenos are harvested they are smoked for 4-5 days in smoke houses to give them their delicious smokey flavour and earthy, mildly sweet aroma with depth and a medium heat. In Mexico you can often find two types of chipotle chillies available, the ‘Morita’ is the seen as being of the highest quality, whilst the ‘Meco’ is seen as having a more intense and smoky flavour as the ‘Meco’ is smoked for a longer period of time.

SUGGESTED USEThe smoky flavour of chipotle chillies lend themselves to making a delicious chilli pesto using red bell peppers, garlic, parmesan cheese and pine nuts and as much of our chipotle chillies as you like to add. Chipotle chillies particularly compliment beef, chicken and pork dishes and add a delicious spiced, smokey flavour and heat to roasted vegetables such as sweet potato and butternut squash. The chillies can be ground and added to curries, chilli-con-carne and a whole variety of spicy dishes. You can use chilli to liven up just about any savoury dish. Add a light dusting of chilli powder and cumin to make extra spicy potato wedges or roasted vegetables for a spicy twist. A little chilli can also enhance the flavour of egg and cheese dishes.
Shelf life of two years provided that goods are stored in an airtight container in ambient conditions.
