Description: Our Hyssop tincture is an infused alcoholic solution, at a ratio of 1:3 (25% alcohol). Hyssop is a perennial evergreen, low growing shrubby herb, growing to a height of up to 0.60 metres, native to Southern Europe; hyssop can also be found growing in the Mediterranean. It has a square stem like other members of the Lamiaceae (mint) family; the leaves are dark green in colour, aromatic and linear. The flowers grow in clusters and are double-lipped, blue in colour, in some varieties white or pink.
Brief History: Hyssop has been used for centuries as an astringent, tonic and expectorant, Hildegard Von Bingen in the 12th century recommended the use of hyssop to cleanse the lungs and liver, ease coughs and treat shortness of breath. John Gerard in the 16th century shared Dioscorides idea that ‘a decoction of Hyssope made with figges, water, honey, and rue, and drunken, helpeth the old cough’ and Culpeper also echoed this use, adding it was an ‘excellent gargle for the quninsy or swelling in the throat’. According to Dr. Fernie, 19th century botanical herbalists used hyssop to treat bronchitis, asthma and to relieve rheumatism in the muscles.
