Product: Tangerine Oil

Latin Name: Citrus reticulata

Plant Family: Rutaceae

Other Names: Tangerijn, Mandarine, Mandarina, Mandarijn, Mandariini, Mandarino, Mandarynka, Naranjita, Cheng Zi, Limau Langkat & Småcitrus.

Description: Tangerine oil comes from a small, evergreen, shrubby tree native to Southern China and Southeast Asia, which grows from 4-6 metres high. The leaves measure 2.5-10cm in length and are elliptically-lanceolate, glossy and smooth with a leathery texture, dark green on the upper side, and yellow-green on the under surface, the leaf edges are finely toothed. The 5-petaled flowers are white, fragrant and approximately 1.5cm in diameter, they grow in clusters in the leaf axils. The fruits are 5-10cm in diameter, obovate, and thin skinned making them easy to peel. The peel is waxy, dimpled and aromatic and reddish orange in colour when ripe.

Interesting Fact: Did you know that tangerines are a verity of mandarin? Which explains why, in many other languages a tangerine is known by derivatives of the name for mandarin. The fruits are most popular in the winter months when they are more readily available. This variety of mandarin gets their name from Tangier a city in Northern Morocco. Many ‘exotic’ goods were brought into England from Tangier and by the early 18th century the word ‘tangerine’ was coined to describe the imported goods. By the 19th century the word was adopted as the name for the variety of mandarin brought from Tangier, originally they were known as ‘Tangerine Oranges’ but the name became shortened to just tangerine.

Blends With: Basil, Bergamot, Black Pepper, Chamomile, Cinnamon, Clary Sage, Clove Bud, Frankincense, Geranium, Grapefruit, Jasmine, Juniper Berry, Lavender, Lemon, Mandarin, Myrrh, Neroli, Nutmeg, Palmarosa, Patchouli, Petitgrain, Rose, Sandalwood, & Ylang-Ylang.

Safety Advice: Tangerine oil is non-toxic, non-irritant and non-sensitising, but it can be phototoxic to certain individuals. Suitable for human consumption in culinary recipes, if a few drops of the oil are used and no more. Essential oils are very potent and high doses should not be consumed.

Tangerine oil can be added to pot pourri and scented sachets to fragrance a room; and a few drops can be used to flavour cakes, biscuits and desserts. Add to lotions, creams facial scrubs, soaps, face masks, and bath salts for the skin, and shampoos for the hair. The oil can be added to washing water for floors and surfaces where an antiseptic property and natural fragrance is required; it can also be used as a fragrant rinse for the hair and added to perfume and scented powders.
